Breathe like this to maximize focus & productivity

How to instantly enter flow state

Yo!

First I wanted to ask what do you think of a consistent newsletter name like Sunday Selects or Sunday Trios? (that way the subject line will be consistent each week) I’ll respond if you just hit reply to this e-mail.

💡 Learning of the week

Anyway, this week I’ve been diving into the science of how your breath can effectively control your brain waves and heart rate. The mayo clinic has research showing how specific breathing patterns can alter your autonomic nervous system, creating a sense of calm and focus almost immediately.

But in summary, I’ve found 2 simple ways of breathing to enhance your levels of focus.

1. The first way is called box breathing.

This is a bit different than meditation, it’s a type of breathing that takes a couple of minutes that will change how you feel immediately.

Apparently the US Navy SEALS use this technique to stay calm and focused in intense situations.

2. The second way is just to make sure you are breathing through your nose and not your mouth.

Mouth-breathing has been linked with ADHD and other sleep disorders. This is because of different levels of oxygen load to the brain. I’m reading a book called Breath that goes into all the science behind it, but I’m interested in testing out mouth-taping during the night too. Would you watch a video about that?

📖 What I’m Reading

I’m making my way through the book A Field Guide to Lucid Dreaming. It’s a full guide to consistently achieve lucid dreams, and I’m reading a few pages before bed each night. Hasn’t worked yet but hopefully soon! I definitely feel like recording my dreams every morning has been helping though.

I also finished reading The Art & Business of Online Writing. It’s this book about this guy that makes a full-time living just by writing stuff on the internet. He talks about what makes writing compelling and how to write things that interest people. I’m incorporating what I’m learning into my twitter!

🍿 Update of the week

I’ve been doing Tim Ferriss’ morning routine protocol for maximizing focus & fat loss. It’s called the 30/30/30. 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking followed by 30 minutes of low intensity exercise. If you watch it leave a comment 🙂

Happy Sunday,
Eric
